What exactly is XHTML?

Sure, you use it. I use it but can you honestly say you know why you use it? Because Jeffrey Zeldman says so? Because clients and project managers are expecting it?

Well, Frequently Asked Questions About XHTML vs HTML is a little refresher posted a while back that sheds quite a lot of light over why and more specifically how we should use XHTML. I also get blasted for suggesting that it helps developers code to a common standard. Not something that went down too well with the author who explained that he thought this should be the case whether coding in HTML or XHTML. Well, from my point of view coding in XHTML has certainly made my code more consistent and swapping to XHTML from HTML does make you re-evaulate certain habits.

Anyway, this is a great thread and should be read by anyone considering refreshing their knowledge of XHTML.
